I have an alarming case of Medium fever. Writing is new for me after a long career of coaching people one-on-one and face-to-face. Writing now is how I spend most of my time and focus.
The beginnings were quite meager, maybe 8–10 reads per article. Then, as I got more active on Medium, the rate of growth made a jump. Things are still very new, and my following is quite small, but seeing the numbers tick up was mesmerizing!
I became spellbound by the stats for a short moment. Checking and rechecking. Fretting if the growth slowed and doing a happy dance when it picked up.
What is this strange spell? I don’t think I can be the only one who caught this bug, so I’m prescribing a remedy for my own benefit as well as yours!
Here is my remedy for you, and really for me too.
- It’s not about the numbers. Do you know the feeling you get when someone seems to be interacting with you, but you can tell they just aren’t into it? When you post with your focus on the numbers, people sense your heart isn’t in it.
- Why do you write anyway? Is it to get a follower or a “clap”? Or is it to express yourself, to share something that you feel is important, or to serve humanity? Write with honest intentions, and trust that things will grow at the right pace for you.
- Do you feel good when you focus on the numbers? I don’t. It makes me feel tense and agitated. It actually gets in the way of my creative mind doing its job.
Instead, I’ll spend my time editing for quality, engaging with my readers, learning from my mentors, and discovering new writers.
This post by my mentor, Tom Kuegler sure helped me too.
